MELBOURNE, April 30. Before the Empire Commission, Mr Oxenham, secretary of the Postal Department, in his evidence stated' that ho was in favour of State-owned Atlantic cables, so that the Pacific Cable Board might have full control of the traffic between the United Kingdom and Australia, iand be in a position to provide the cheapest, speediest, and. most efficient service possible in the circumstances. He suggested that the ordinary cable rates .should, be reduced to 25., and press to sixpence, deferred to Is., and weck~-end cables to sixpence a word. He considered the present press cables would bo considerably increased if the rates were reduced.
