At a special meeting of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board called by the Inspector-General of Hospitals (Dr Vnliiitine) yesterday, an important proposal was made by tlie Health Department in regard to the decision of tho Board to engage «. bac: teriologist for tho hospital. Dr. Valintino said tho matter proposed to be put before the Board was an important one. Ho believed the Medical Superintendent (Dr Hardwick Smith) had been instructed to engage a bacteriologist in London. The proposal which he had to make was that Dr Hurley (Government Bacteriologist, of Wellington) should bo appointed bacteriologist to Iho Hospital Board together with hie staff. The total salaries ,of the bacteriological staff would amount to £1150 Her'annum, half of which would be paid by the Government and half by tho Hospital Beard. The Board would retain all fees, which would amount to about £200. The department would hand over its. m*esent equipment, so that instead of having two laboratories there would; bo one thoroughly up-to-data in every respect/ If this arrangement were agreed to, a similar orrangoment would be -made with other centres. The department would have the nsa of the pathological block at the Hospital, and the Board would be able to call en tho service of Dr Makgill (Government Pathologist). The Government would require to occupy only about two days per month for the manu- ; f-'.tuTc of T:»ooino. . ■
