Obituary.—Lord Wolseley

Ho caught a chill a week ago, and it developed into influenza. The King and Colonel Seely sent messages to his widow. There were many other tributes.

Field-Marshal Lord Wolseley held many civil nad-military honours, among them being: K.P., P. 0., G.C.8., G.C.M.G., D.C.L., LL.D., OM., 1902; Field-Marshal, Colonel Royal Horse Guards, Gold Stick-in-Waiting, Colonel-m-Chief Royal Irish ' Regiment, and Hon. Colonel Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry. He -was born in 1833, and entered the army in 1852. He served in the 80th Foot in the Burmese War. 1852-53, in the Crimea with the 90th Light Infantry (severely wounded, mentioned in despatches, awarded the brevet pi major and the medal with clasp, mado a Knight of the I/ogioh of Honour, and awarded the Turkish Medjidie of the sth class), at Lucknow and in the defence of Alunibagh, in the Mutiny,' when he was appointed Lieut.Colcnel; and in China, in 1860. In 1867 hh was appointed D.G.D. in Canada, and three years later commanded the Rod Rivc-r expedition. Back in England, in 1871 he was A.A.G. at headquarters, and ir- 1873 he had command of the troops on the Gold Coast during tho Avar with the Ashantees. After the war he received the thanks of Parliament and a grant of £25.000 for courage, energy .and perseverance in tho conduct of the Avar, and was also presented, with the Freedom of the City Vnn on • n amJ * s"'ord of tlie value of JUJU guineas when he returned in/1874 ' Ho was Governor of X&tal in 1879; Quartermaster of tho Forces in 1880: .Adjutant-General 1882-85; and Com-mander-in-Chief. of the expeditionary forco to Egypt in 1882, and as a result .received the thanks of Parliament, was uiisecl to the peerage, and given a grant of £30,000, also the general medal with clasptt o first class Osmanieh, and the Khedive's star. Viscount Wolseley commanded the Gordon Relief Expeditioii in. 1884-85, and was again thanked by Parliament, and raised' to •a \ isoountcy. He was Adjutant-Gene-ral of the Forces, 1885-00; Commander c! the I oroes in Ireland, 1890-95: FieldSSf 81; }* a«d Commander-in-CJiief of the Army, 1895-1901. During the past thirteen years he had lived in retirement.
