(By " Crawl.") The visiting swimmers have he-em rolling into Wanganui during the last two or three days, and the Aufkla-ul <x>ntingenfc, which arrived on Thn r«rl\v afternoon,, cor.sidorably swelled tho flumbers.

should have more than any other town in New Zealand. Moreover, we havo a river and the sea wherein to prosecute our endeavours for swimming excellence.

The nopresentatiivies of the Queen City find that Wanganui is not such <. little town as they had imagined. They find our water to be slightly different from that to i^hieh they arc accustomed, which is sea water.

Champion, Weison and O'Hare are reported to he in great fettle, and it is oonfidentally expected' of Champion that ho will swim the 100 yards in less than one minute. We have^ therefore, something to see.

The Blenheim swimmers, numbering nine, arrived yesterday, and are putting up at McCarthy's Hotel. They report themselves in good form, and hope to do well in the handicap events.

Wanganui will be represented by the following:—Mujliler, 100yd>;., 22OydV-.: Hardy, 440 yds.; Thomas, 880 yds/ and mile; Squires, 220 yds. breiast-pfcrok'l.

There is a young man contributing notes to the "Heralcl" under the nom-de-guerre of "Splash," whose arguments nnd methods are both curious and amusing.

He really knows little, or less than little, of his subject, but under ambiguously worded paragraphs endeavours to hoodwink an easy-going public. "Splash" says my contention that Muller is the beet man in the polo team is obviously wrong. He maintains that Muller is not determined, not in form, and not as eood as either Meuli or Pownall. Well ! How can one argue with such an unobservant and totally incapable critic as this one shows himself to be? Fortunately, swimmers are men of sense, and neither Meuli ,nor Pownnll, in common with the rest, are guileless enough to accont seriously the dodderings of friend "Snlash."

Methinks that when he irKtationed Mpiili and Pownall he forgot that Slvfield was in the team—Slyfield, who lx« f i*: 'lps our narrow nolo world as doth a Colossus!

T have no intention of deWing the point, about ■Muller's cannbUiticn. but shall content myself with loayiacr it

to the public to judge for themselves who is the best man in local polo next week. Muller was our hero last year. Let us see who is the Sir Galahtad to unhorse him! *

"Splash" says that Jago is not coming to play, and as an old proverb says, "Let us be thankful for small mercies."

"Splash" argues reasonably well that Mitchell should be in the team, and ho is right. But why overlook L. Cave Armstrong? 1 could adduce some good reasons in favour of Armstrong's inclusion, but seeing that Brown is selected, the fates Forbid!
