MASTERTON, Dec. 18. The weather was fine to-day for the »at* between fo«th Melbourne and wmm won the toss and- sent Wairarapa > 52, wickets. Wairarapa made a poor display against the bowling of Giller Kvk and Kenny. Gilkr, who bowled the visitors was remarkably good, although several chances were missed . South -Melbourne knocked up 217 foi . the lo«s of eight wickets, when stnmpj . were drawn for the day Harry Trott and -dismissed by the first ball. The - chief scorers were Sykes 481, W. Scott 07 b r>eas 35 -T. Kyle 30 not out, I. gViB, atd H. Kelly 13 nbt out. Svkes gave a very fine display of allround cricket, his driving 'being .partiiularly good. Scott played a .splendid -innings, his score including; six fours. R Deas also gave an attractive exhibition, while Kyle played-vigorously and made the meat attractive -display of the ■whole of the visitors. McAlpine was Hhe most successful trundler for Wnitarapa, taking six* wickets for 80. Hickson took two for 43. The match will ibe continued at noon
to-morrow. '•': . The visitors were accorded a civic welcome this morning, and afterwards entertained at luncheon. They will be motored into the country to-morrow morning and entertained at a smoke concert to-morrow night. They leave for Wellington' en route for Blenheim on Friday morning, and play Maryborough rens. on Saturday and Monday.
