ENGINEERS AT VARIANCE.

AUCKLAND, December 17
The unexpected resignations of Chief Assistant Engineer Mr. F. E. Powell, and temporary Assistant Engineer 31 r. R. J. McKay, last week, in a manner suggesting serious differences of <)p-n----ion between the Harbour Board's Ei:"ginoer and ihis assistants respecting the method of dealing witTi some of thy engineering problems confrontI.i#1.i# tho Board, came i;p this afternoon at the* Board meeting. The Board's Engineer (Mr. Hamer) in a Teport on tno subject stated that on Nov. 17th JVessrs. Powell and McKay applied for increases in salary. This was not griuted, ;and on December 6th they wrote a letter containing their resignsiln >ns and allegations as to the methods of doing certain work. McKay's resigiat-H-i had 'been accepted by the chaiman prior to the Board meeting. Powell's resignation was accepted to-day. The Engineer is to report' on the whole subject.
