CREATING WEALTH FOR FARMER AND COUNTRY.

A PROSPEROUS DISTRICT.

PATEA'S GREAT RETURNS,

SHIPMENTS FOR THE WEEK WORTH OVER £40,000.

(From Our Travelling Reporter.) PATE A, Decemiber 17. Au ex-Minister of an Australian Parliament once said that he never passed a cow without taking off his hat to her because of tho great work she was doin<* for the people >and country. In our district "Her Majesty" is also doing much towards creating wealth for the farmer aud the Dominion generally, and our export trade gives some idea of her importance and value. A considerable portion of the country sur•rouiiding Wanganui and Hawera is ;contributing butter >and cheese to the Patea grading stores, and last week I was able to quote figures showing that this West Coast Eldorado port was handling over £30,000 worth of dairy produce'a week. During the week just ended, the value of the intakes increased somewhat, the numibier of crates of cheese aggregating 7 : 500 and the boxes of butter 3,000, so that the week's handling of these two valuable products from the dairy herds of \j;he district would be worth approximately £39,000. On Thursday 1600 crates were handled and on Friday 1500 crates, so ■ that over £12,000 worth of cheese had been graded during the two days in question. During the week boats were sent over the bar as follows :— Sunday—Kapunui, 1300 crates ot cheese and 3,000 boxes of butter; approximate value of shipment £14,200. Monday — Wan rau, 800 criates of cheese, value £3,200. Tuesday—Kiri.paba, 1000 crates of cheese, value £4,000. Wednesday — Mian a, 900 crates of i cheese, value £3,600. Thursday—Kapuott, 1400 crates of cheese, value £5,600. Friday—Kiripatoa 'and Mana, 1800 crates of cheese,, value- £7,200. Saturday—Kapunui, 1400 crates of cheese, value £5,600, or a total value of £43,400. Between now o.nd Christmas 13,000 cnates of cheese are to be shipped; aleo 3.000 boxes of butter, the value being estimated at £61,000. The above figures speak eloquently of 'what the cow is doing for the country.
