THE FARMERS OF THE FUTURE.

ENCOURAGING THE YOUNGSTERS

THE MARCH CAMP

TWO MEDALS TO BE AWARDED

(From Our Travelling Reporter.)

MARTON, December 14

The excellent work done at the recent agricultural camp a.t "Ahnadale" was referred to at the committee meeting of tho Feilding A. and P. Association on Friday night, when the President, Mr Erfi,Gi«?t Short, suggested that two medals should be given at the camp in March next to tho boys showing the most proficiency in judging stock. Mr Short explained how the boys at the recent camp had take,n a most intel'Mgent interest in the. stock, and, instructed by bis expert, had very soon become conversant with the points of Clydesdales. Horefords, and Romneys. Ho believed in encouraging the boys. Mr F. Y. Lethbridge said he had visited tho camp, had found the work done very practical, and the lads very intelligent. He heartily approved of the President's suggestion. Mr Hugh BurrelT agreed with the idea, but ho would like to see the prizes given^ to the boys showing the best general work throughout the oa,nup. To this latter suggestion Mr A. Campbell agreed, saying the iboy showing tho best adaptability in general farm work should get the pri^e. Mr H. J. Booth, who had visited the camp, said it was only right the Association should encourage it. They were training the boys to be judges of stock. Mr D. H. Guthrie, M.P., said tho giving ;of the prizes would popularise the movement to a. very great extent. Ho explained that the boys kept a daily written record of all their work. This would assist in awarding the trophies. Mr .las. Knight thought the camp method an even better idea than getting young fellows to accompany judges at tho Show.

After further discussion, Mr N. Gorton proposed that a gold and a silver medal l>o obtained, tk> bo ipresented to tlio two boys at the March camtp doing tho best work throughout the camp; the awards to be made by two stewards appointed by the Association, who will make all arrangements. The motion w.as seconded by Mr F. F. Hagigitt. and agreed to. Messrs Hugh Burrefl and Hector J. Booth wero appointed the stewards.
