The late Sir Thomas Borthwick's estate 'has boon sworn at £345,437. Constable J. Barry, who has been stationed for several years dv Palmerston, 'haa been transferredl to Wanganui.

The death ■•occurred" at Te Arena, on Thursday morning, of Mrs. H. Collins, relict of the late Sir.' Henry Collins. Tho deceased lady, who was visiting her son, was taken suddenly ill and after a short illness of little more than a week died at his residence. She leaves a family of four sons and four daughters to mourn their loss, amongst whom is Mr. T. L. Collins. The late Mrs. Collins 'belongs !to one of the pionjeer families of New Zealand. Her father, Mr. Thomas Waters, was tho first merchant to carry on business in Wanganui, on tho sito now occupied by Messrs. Jas. Thain and Co. Mrs" Collins passed through tho troublous times around Wanganui during the Maori war, and by hier death another of the early pioneers to whom New Zealand owes so much has passed to her long rest after «. long, strenuous life of 78 years, so much time of which was devoted to helping- those in need.

Mr. and Mrs. W. Davis, of Waverley, celebrated their golden wedding on Friday. This is the third golden wedding in Waverley during tho last six months. Mr. and Mrs. J. Walker and Mr. and Mis. A. .Catanach having celebrated their 50 years of married life within that time.

Christie, of St. John's Hill, and 'who has been studying medicine at Edinburgh University for tho past five years, has passed his final examination and obtained his degree. A meeting of tho District Nurse Committee was held yesterday, when applications for th.c position of District Nurse were considered. Tho applications received all brought the highest references, so a ballot was taken, resulting in Nurse Anketell. of Wellington, being appointed. Nurse Anketell comes to Wanganui an experienced nurse, high up in her profession. She was ono of the nurses at Somes Island when the troopers returning from South Africa w-pro sent there.

Mr. J. S. Wratt, Mayor of Mutueka, died on Saturday after an exceedingly brief illness. The funeral took place yesterday, and was attended by representatives of most of the local bodies in tho district. Bishops Sadlier and Mules participated in the burial service.—Press Association.

Mr. T. Arthur, who retired from the position of railway traffic superintendent in 1900, died at his residence in Hobson Street, Wellington, yesterday morning after a short illness/ The deceased gentleman was in the railway service for about forty years.
