AT THE BROTHERHOOD

. There 'was a very good attendance at the Brotherhood meeting yesterday to boar the Rev Canon Garlandl speak on the ialbove subject.

Mr W. G. Rasscitt (the .chairman), on introducing tho speaker said that when the present system of education wias first formed ho was against the principle of tho Bible in schools, but after seeing the operation of the principle ho was naw in favour of it.

Tho Rev Oanon Garland said that by tho wlay some people spoke, of him one would think that he .wias a foredignor from some outlandish place, and not a Britisher. All ho asked for was fair .play. It -was the traditun- and practice of the British race that some system of religious teaching should be in operation in the dtay school. There was much dissatisfaction with a large section of the community with the present secular system, as instanced- by ccrthin Dills introduced in Parliament and: tho resolutions passed by different

Church conferences, synods, etc. He argued that the system advocated had been & great success in Australia. Although the heads of the Romian Catholic Church denounced the system, he assured the audience that the people of that Church were perfectly satisfied with it. Comparing the difference (between New Zealand and Australia, he said that there was more eatisfiatcion with the Bible in schools system in Australia than the secular system in New Zea T land.
