SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.
AN AUCKLAND SUGGESTION.
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 13. At Kings College breaking up ceremony yesterday the Principal, Mr. C~ T. Major, suggested that it might be possible to follow the lead of the Polish public schools in substituting two half holidays in a week instead of one clear Saturday. The desirability of the Change, he said, was evident from many standpoints, more particularly in the case of boarders. Next year there would be in school about 150 day boys and ,an almost equal number of boarders. It was difficult even now to provide occupation for even 100 .boys on Saturday in the restricted area at their disposal. Mr. Major held that not only do 'btfys work better in the morning, but that the continuity of their work from one week to anothe? would be improved by substituting Saturday morning for Wednesday afternoon, thus securing a break of only one day. School gamea would, also benefit to a great extent, as organised practices could be held on Wednesday afternoon, which are impossible on Saturday morning. Masters would have to make the only sacrifice in having their week-ends curtailed, but for the good of the feoys they were prepared to agree to the change. Mr. Major said he had interviewed par-ents,-and a great number were in favour of the change. The present system would be continued next term, 'while further inquiries were made, and he hoped that they would be make to make the change at the beginning of the second term.
Mr. E. K. Mulgan, Chief Inspector of Schools, in conversation with a, "Star" reporter on the subject, said that he thoroughly agreed with Mr. Major in his proposal. The system "was feeing tried with success in Southern colleges, notably Christ's College, Christchurch. The idea had not been, mooted in connection with primary .schools, ibut he thought that was a different altogether, and would bear much discussion. "
