AMUSEMENTS MEETINGS, ETC.

LYCEUM THEATRE

HAYWABD'S CHEONICLE TONIGHT. •

A fine programme iras presented at the Lyceum Theatre last evening, when the usual midweek change was put onThe programme was well chosen, there being something to please all tastes. rh& dramatics were a very powerful lot the stars being "On the (Pupil of His; Eye," and "A Wife of the Hills." The scenics and topioals -were~of a very interesting nature, and the comics "were "lost laughable. The Lyric Orchestra added considerablyl to the enjoyment of the entertainment by playing an ex~ cellent programme.

TO-NIGHT The programme will be repeated, arid m addition Chronicle,'* which met with such a fine reception air the 'Opera House last evening, will be*' added. This is a really magnificent picture, and should.not be missed. Withsuch a great bill of fare, the Lyceum should be; crowded. The prices of admission are: Stalls 6d., circle Is.

" THE KING'S THEATRE

The new programme presented at the ■■ King's Theatre last evening was excellent, and-met with the hearty approval' of the audience. It will be repeated" this evening.

-ROYAL PICTURES. -

Even standing room was at a pre-. mium at the Opera House last evening/ when the Royal Pictures were shown-: for the first time. The excellence of the programme -was in keeping with the size of the "House," and a noticeablefeature was the splendid screening. This is due to the fact that the machine is operated from the stage instead of from the pit as heretofore. This, of course, is only possible where there is a large, stage, and it works eminently well in the case of the Opera House. Not only are the pictures screened in a firstclass manner, but there is an entire absence of that ceaseless "clatter"" which" is not. music. "While refering to 'music, it may be mentioned that a first class orchestra of (seven, under Mr Edgar Collins, assisted materially to make the entertainment go with' a healthy swing for over two hours. As for the pictures, a very fine series was provided, and the Royal management* have set themselves a high standard to maintain. It is difficult ty> individualisc\ ibut there was one film around which most interest centred. _This was " Hay ward's Chronicle," an* interesting (budget of topical views. Remarkably clear pictures were shown of the arrival of the New Zealand .and Canadian Cadets, People's Day at the Wanganui Show, the Wanganui 'Bowling "Green, D.H-S. baths,. Boyd and Brtmnan's " crocodile" of carriages' returning f rom~ the Show, and last, but not least, certain grotesque figures which ■will cause - much amusement at the 'Garden Fete. This is one of the test local (picturfcts seen here. A very long and particularly ■ powerful drama is "Cruel Fate." "On the Pupil of His Eye" is an enthralling: detective drama. Other fine pictures shown were:—" Scenes in Barcelona" " (finely coloured), "Manufacture of Artificial Flowers" (also a coloured film), "The Moonlight v Trail" (a 'drama), "Climbing Mount Blanc," and "Willit.Ever HappenP" (very amusing). We congratulate the proprietors of theRoyal Pictures on the success which attended their opening entertainment. The second show takes place on Thursday evening next.

OPERA HOUSE

JAiNSEN, THE MAGICIAN

The mysterious Jansen and his big" American company wiH ajpipear for one••----night only in the Opera House on Monday .next, December 16.. The ibox plan is at H. I. Jones mid Son's.,, For fcheconvenience of country residents who cannot ooine to town to mark off their seats, it has been arranged that their seats will be reserved for them if theiy forward four ghiiHin^s to the ibox office. So that 'back stall and pit (platoons may secure their tickets in~ iaafvanjee, ~ to avoid crushing at the 'boxes, day sales are at Roberts' tobacconist's, shop* next c Post Office. rA Wellington paiper says of Jansen's return season to that town : "The return to Wellington of the clever Jensen, with his ""big budiget of tricks andl illusions, was "welcomed by a large and enthusiastic audience at; tire- OjJera House. Jansen is no ordinary conjurer. In rbhose tricks which 'have distinguished him' he has departed well from the beaten track, andi has continued' far beyond tihe point where so many others have efcoppdd."* After dealing further with Jiansen'sconjuring, in a very eulogistic strain," the exchange continues: 7i These,, however; are 'but a f€iw of Jansen's tricks Throughout the whole entertainment he rains them down in rapid sequence, and! the attention is never permitted to relax. Vaudeville items lend variety to the programme, and JanseA's extras vaganaa, ' Down on the Farm,' is very funny." Several new artists are supporting 'th 0 great Jansen. Erofm ft packing case supplied by PuTser and Sons. Miss Edna Herr will'undertake to escape, after •■being securely nailed inside the same.
