LABOURERS' DEMANDS.

The Wellington City Council, the Gas Co.. all the suburban municipalities, and "other large employers of general labourers in the vicinity of iWellington have been or are being served with a new set of claims by the General Labourers' Union. It is claimed that a full 'week's work shall not exceed 44 hours, and shall not exceed eight hours on five days of the week, and four hours on Saturday, working hours to be (between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on five days of the week, and between the hours of 7 a.m. and 12 noon on Saturday. In tunnel work the hours shall not exceed eight per shififfrom (bank to bank, with half an hour for" crib" time. Six hours shall constitute a day's, work when workers are working in wet places or in foul air, and shall l>e paid for as if the workers had worked eight hours. The following are asked as the minimum rates of wages for the several classes of workers:—Tunnelmen and timber men, 12s. per shift; all other, workers employed underground' 12s. per shift; men engaged in sinking shafts 12s. per shift; pipelayer.s Is. (3d. per hour: caulkers, powder men, hammer and drjll men, jumpermen, labourers engaged in drainage, sewerage, and all other classes of labouring work not herein specified, Is. 3d. per hour. . Overtime pay is sought at t"he rate of time and a half for the first twoTiours, and double time thereafter. Double pay is also asked for work done on the following holidays:—New Year's Day, Good Friday. Easter Monday, Labour Day, the birthday of the Sovereign, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.
