NEW LINER TO CALL AT AUOK-

AUCKLAND, December 12. .Negotiations are now in progress, in view- of the approaching^opening of the Panama Canal for another important line of steamers to make Auckland one of its ports of call. It has already been announced that, the possibilities of the Norddeutcher Lloyd steamers calling at Auckland under an arrangement similar to that by which the P. and 0. vessels now visit this port, were beine investigated. A^ "Herald" representative during a chat with Mr. Paul Butzmuhlen, of. Leipsig, who is at present °n a T VJsit to the city, learned that the rs.JJ.lj. One of the obstacles wa s the high scale of tariffs for certain goods now manufactured* in Germany, and for which there was a demand in rvew Zealand. -Referring to the prejudice which which German goods are looked upon in some quarters, Mr. Butznrahlen said that there were absolutely no grounds, in his opinion, for that teeling. # Trade >must necessarily 'become international, and in certain directions Germany^ was .better able to manufacture goods than English firms, and owtng to the lower wages ruling in Germany they could of ten: produce machinery and similar goods at a lower cost, but Germany patronised English firms to a very large extent, and r gradually it more trade were opened up it would be,co>ne Reciprocal and international, from his-own observations, Mr. Butzmuhlen said that in his opinion German steamship lines" would find it profitable to call at Auckland.
