THE TIMBER INDUSTRY.
GREAT SCARCITY OF MATAI
INCREASE OF Is. PER 1000 FT
(By Our Travelling -Reporter.)
MARTON, October 30
I have been credibly informed that the Rangitikei iSawmillers' Association has increased the prico of heart of matai by ono shilling per 100 ft. The reason for tho advance is the growing demand for this timber, and tho decreased supplies. Matai appears to be doomed, and it is only a matter of a little time, comparatively speaking, when this valuable timber, which for cleanliness and durability comes next to kauri, will bo cut right out. Tho Hawko's Bay, Manawatu, and Wairarapa bush has completely disappeared, and supplies are now being won from the bush in tho . Kins; Country. Tho supply, however, is limited, and a- matai bush clocks not apparently exist just now, tho bulk of tho timber coming forward being obtained from bush of mixen timber. There is a very great demand for heart of matai, and in consequence, combined , with tho limited forest areas of matai, j p.nd being more exnensive to obtain. ! tho price of heart has been increased by Is. -ncr 100.
It. may bo ef interest to know that *™iti wji.q built on land ihat in the early days carried a magnificent forest of matai.
