CITY BAND ART UNION.

Tho valuable prizes being given; by tho City Band for their art union aro having the natural result of creating a great demand for tickets. Some idea of the great value being offered can be gauged when the prize-list is studied. Tho first prize is a beautiful carved piano, valued v.t 70 guineas. This is an upright grand, and is described by Professor Cardston as one of the most beautiful toned instruments it has been liia good fortune to see in his many travels.

A bedroom suite consisting of duch*ess chest, wardrobe, washstand, and bed constitutes the second prize. This set i;; really beautiful, and fit to grace the palaco of a king.

A largo oil <r>ainting of Pelorus Sound from tho brush of Mr. Kirkwood will be the next prize, arid is certainly one of tho best productions of this talented artist. Altogether there will be no less than fourteen additional prizes given, any ono of which will bo a delight to the. winner. Although pressed to postpone tho (Into nf drawing the committee has resMutelv refused to do so, holding that tho public is entitled to more consideration than is often the eniw in thow mnl--tors. AN EXTHUTSASTIC MEETING

There wag a large attendance in the Borough Council Chambers last evening, "Mr. M. S'purdle presiding. Proceedings wero enthusiastic. Art Union.—Tho Art Union Committee reported, that everything in connection with this was going off well it was decided to endeavour to arrange for tho trousseau to bo -disnlayed separately at tho Agricultural Show, if possible in the Industries Hall. Refreshment Stall.—Th? Town Clerk notified- that the Borough Chamber* would bo available unless it was found necessary to hold an election during that week. Tho arranging of beating appliances in ' connection with the refreshment room wn.s referred to the Hall Committee. Mr. ,T. Meuli to report at next meeting.
