Gladys Evans, a suffragette, who was imprisoned for attempting to set fire to the Dublin Theatre, has been hunger striking since her arrest. Miss Evans was discharged in consideration of the fact that she had been under detention since arrest, the magistrate remarking that there was a. difficulty in dealing with people for whom punishment had no terror and servitude no shame.
The judges of the recent aeroplane competition on Salisbury Plain state that four British engines entered, although these did not promise to be equal to the best foreign high-powered engines. The judges emphasise the importansco of encouraging the establishment of a first-rate British air-craft engine industry. PEKING, Oct. 29. The Powers have protested against the alienation of portion of the sale revenue for the guarantee of the Crisp loan, while the Boxer indemnity has not been paid ud to date. WASHINGTON, Oct. 29. The cruisers Baltimore and Yorktown are ready to sail for Cuba owing to the disquieting reports as to the conditions there. THE HAGUE, Oct. 29. Arbitration has been begun concerning Russia's claims for the Turkish payment of losses incurred by Russian subjects during the Russo-Turkish War, of which twenty years' instalments are in arrear. CAIRO, Oct. 29. Two thousand circulars have been seized at Alexandria summoning Syrian Roman Catholics to unite in an orthodox anti-Turkish struggle. OTTAWA, Oct. 29. Loius Codere has been sworn in .as Secretary of State in the Borden Cabinet. Mr Rogers has been transferred to the Public Works Department, succeeding Mr Monk, and Mr Roche transferred to the Department of the Interior.
