MARTON, October 29
A littlo ancient history of Rangitikei dairymen was touched upon by Mr. Jf. (i. Wilson, President of tho Farmers' Union, at Marton Farm School, when impressing upon the Inds the revolution caused in so many industries by tho application of science. He could well remember, ho said, when in tho early days tho people on tho hills brought their butter down to tho storeman rind sold it for -Id. per lb., and invariably ho was obliged to tako his earnings out in stores. It was very rarely that ho had ready money to spend, and most of them wero obliged to pro back into the bush to gather honey for sujrar. It seemc-d almost incomprehensible that such studies could bo made, and such bip; profits; could be created, in so short a time, but science had told its tale. First of all Dr. do Laval worked out to a. successful issue tho system of separation ; followed by tho'work of Dr. Babcor-k, of Winseonsin College, in reading exactly tho quantity of fat contained in tha milk. Pasteur and others had also assisted in tho great advance of science, nnd the result lias been that New Zealand has been lifted up to take, its placo among tho big exporting countries of tho world, being .ablo now to export million-, of pounds worth ef dairy produco each year. At tho same timo tho p.veracto dairyman did not think enough. Ho carried on his work imperfectly" and was very much behind-hand :n the iTO-ling of h^s cattle. If tho application of scientific methods wero adov>tcd m r'r.» .<?;. ::cr I 1 dv tho dairy farmers, tho latter would not only put moro ir.oii"y int-i h:s o•. p •:■■•■■■'■- et hut he would increasa to a marvellour, extent tho valno of the Dominion as an cxnortin^; country. For instance, cow-testing bad not Iveen taken up as rapidly as it '■•lionld h-ivo br-n. nnd voh tho tcstin?: of herds, whore adopted, had helped wonderfully in an i.TM-eV^cd output. Ho Avar, pleaded that, t l -.^ Government was ar-R;sti?'K the movement, r.n-.l it was honed that, hnfnro 1.-jng cow-t-est-iiif-: would bo universal.
