TAIHAPE NOTES.

(From our Own Correspondent.) The Matron of the Taihape District Hospital acknowledges with thanks the receipt of a parcel of periodicaQs from Mrs Sn,ith, also several gifts of flowers from other friends.

The four shops to be erected in the main street by Mr G. Wrightson are for Mr John Hfggins, of Naj>ier, Mr. A. Crawford dsv making extensive alterations to his building in tho main street. New premises are also being erected in the main street, opposite the Gretna Hall, to the order of Mr C. C. Wansborough, commercial printer, of Taihape. These premises will be more commodious and up-to-date than those at present occupied by the firm.

While bushfelling at Oruakurukuru on Monday, Mr S. Wright was rendered unconscious by a blow from a falling limb. Dr Owen rendered medical assistance, but tho sufferer's condition is not regarded as serious.

At the inquest held by Mr J. P. .Aldridge, Coroner, ;on Monday concerning the death of Lawrence Greange, who was killed in the bush at Manui. the evidence showed that deceased and a man named McNamara were felling a rimu tree. .Thetwo men were apparently out of the danger zone, but the tree sprang backwards, Greange being struck on the head, sustaining injuries from which he died three hours later. A verdict of accidentally killed whilst bush felling was recorded.

Mr R. W. Smith, M.P. for Waimarino, visited Feilding on Saturday to interview the chairman of the Wangarrai Education Board in reference to th-<"> Mrmwhango School and the- establishment of a school nt Gardener's Siding, near Hihitahi. Mr Smith proceedrd on to Wancr-nhui, where his son has bepn seriously ill. '

The proposal to erect a cheese factory in Taihape will lapse this season, owing to there not being sufficient time to make the necessary arrangements. It ~is understood, however, that the Co-op-er?.t'ivo Dairy Company probose to take tho matter up in time for the next season.

Messrs S. Cai-tier and Beckman have taken over the stables in Hautapu St., known as Myles' stables.

A social was held at the local Presbyterian Church on Tuesday night to obtain funds for installing the electric light in the building. There was a, large attendance, who seemed to enjoy tho entertainment provided for them. The Rev Catherwood presided. The following programme was gone through: Songs, Misses Archer, MeKeowen, Mesdames Brown and Mortland, Messrs. Murray, Rhodes and Crawford; and a duet by Mesdames Owens and Brown. Several glees and quartettes were also sung. Recitations wero given by the Revs. Catherwood and Parsons^ a 'reading, by Mr J. P. Aldridge, and two euphonium solos by Mr Austin. Mrs Butler made a most efficient accompanist. Mr Catherwood proposed a vote of thanks to th© performers, and particularly praised the valuable services rendered by Mrs Owens in arranging the programme. Mrs Butler was also specially thanked, as w.as suso Mr h. \V. W. Brown, who kinaiy lent the piano. Tho following further donations have been received by tho secretary of the Raugitkei A. and P. Show towards the prize fund: Mr W. Poole, £3 35., as a special prize for most entries in the farmers' classes; Mr Stanley Peyton, two troohics of £1 Is. each for pony classes;"Mr C. E. Darvill, £1 Is. Miss K. Manning, of the Taihape telephono exchange, has been . transferred to Nelson exchange, and left for Nelson on Monday. Miss Banning was a prominent member of tho Taihape Tennis Club, and also took ,a prominent part in the social functions, and acted as organist for tho local Presbyterian Church. She was farewelled at the station by a large gathering of her lady friends.

Mrs Butler, of Dunedin, is at present spending a holiday in Taihape. Mr W. Anderson, of the local railway statf, who was recently married in Dunedin, "has returned to Taihape with Mm Andeson.
