The head men of the maintenance department, workshop and wharves, and othfers not engaged in running trains on polling day, received a circular telling the men to cease work at noon on polling day. They made preparations accordingly. At 1.1.40 a .verbal message was sent to the foreman of the.wharf repairing gfng saying that work must contiiro.-i. till 1. The men declined, as they ha<i worked from 6 to suit the tide next morning. Thirteen, including three' permanents. were .suspended and arc- not yet. working.
