WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday evening. Present:-:*— Messrs F. Pirani (Chairman), E. Dixon, A. Fraser, J. P. Aldridge, F. Purnell, F. M. Spurdle, P. ODea and D. H. Guthrie, M.P. ! ' Minutes. —The:minutes' oi the prej vious meeting were read and confirmed. Finance. —The cash statement showed: "Cerier.nl A/c Cr. £4243 Os 9d; Land imies A/c i.r. £153 2s 7d; Manual and- Technical A/c Dr. £359S 17s lid; Bank balance (21/6/1.1) Cr. £203'19s 6d. The following resignations were received:—M. F. Tolme (Kapuni), L. G. Sarten (Kaitcfke).. A. Gillanders (Normanby), M. M. Wilson (Wangaehu), F. M. de Barran (Oroua Bridge), E. Kerrisk (Hurleyville),' A. Yoysey (Taihape), E. McMeckin (Dunolly). Appointments.—The following appointments were agreed to: — Kawhatau — R. J. Williamson; Orautoha: H. P. Jarrett; Manutahi: A. S. Harper; Cheltenham: M. R. McEwan; Coal Creak: A. S. Burns; Foxton: E. Smith; Waiata: H. Harre; Mokoia: O. L. Simmons; Kelvin Grove: J. Harre; Carnarvon: A. W. Booth. ■ . Transfers. — Eleven applications for transfers were referred to the Chief Inspector. Leave of Absence—Leave of absence was granted as, follows:— R. C. Cameron (ten days); I. Young (one month); F. Horneman (one month); D. Taylor (3 weeks); L. Gray (fortnight); .D. Reed (one week); M. Ray (fortnight); E. M. Stafford (one week); W. D. Johns (two months); R. Armstrong (three weks); W. F. Gilligan (five weeks); A. Kennedy (one month); A. M. Bousfield (one wee£); I. D. Hanierton (three weks); A. Cameron (two weeks); B. M. McDonnell (three days); C. W. Liggins (fortnight); E. Billens (three days). Long Acre. —A deputation from the Long Acre School Committee waited on the Board to request that a teacher's residence be erected, as great difficulty was found at present in accommodating the teacher. The. chairman of the Board said that the average attendance was 12 or 14, and he thought it would be ridiculous to ask the Government to erect a residence, considering such a small attendance. The deputation explained that there was a likelihood of the population of the district increasing. After a lengthy discussion the Board promised to do what it could, said also at the request of i the deputation voted £6 for a chimney to the schoblhc>us(|. | Mars Hill.— A deputation waited ( on the Board protesting against the closing of the Mars Hill school in favour of Durie Hill. The Chair-! man said that before definitely deciding; the deputation's x'equests would be considered,' as the Board did not want to impose^hardship on anyone; He remarked that the Maoris had promised land iat Putiki, and as the residents on Dmie Hill had de-' dined to contribute,; the Maoris' offer would have to be-considered. Mosston.—A deputation from the Mosston committee? waited on the Board and reported having elected a" committee and secftred the services ■ of Mr. Meuli to report on the school, j His estimate for removing and renovating was £150. ' Some misunderstanding seemed td 1 exist regarding the selling of the old site, but the' Board replied that this could be sold ; only for the purchase of new land and not for re-builjling., The Board owed £39(3 on thelntewlsite, and could not afford to pay £700 or so on a new • school. The deputation explained that there were 30 or 40 children in the tent and there was no other build- ' ing to be obtained, but an effort would be made to secure'the church. The deputation promised to endeavour to raise funds for the purpose of removing the school, the Board, agreeing to give every assistance. ' j Tenders.—The tenders of Messrs. Russell and Bignell were accepted for the erection* of engineering workshop and removal of old buildings Wangaganui Technical College. :' ' GENERAL. The Chairman, the Chief Inspector ;.nd Messrs Pilinoll, Eraser and Guth- '■ rie are to visit Carnarvon and Mako- [ whai districts with the view of ascertaining the desirability of selecting a central site for a school. • | Mr. Guthrie reported that the Mm- J ister had refused any grant towards the re-building of the Patea and Marton schools, and :he moved that the Chairman, Messrs Purnell, Spurdle, ' Dixon and ODea, with Mr. Croft and the Chief Inspector ,visit Patea to in- ' spectthe school with the view to effecting improvements. j On the report of Mr. O'Dea. application is to be made to the Government for a 20-school at Ngutuwera. A grant for latrines was made to Whenuakura. > j Mr. Dixon reported re heating science room atiEltham, and it was decided to build a chimney. i Accounts amounting to £3,18S 7s.1 were passed for payment. | The Chief Inspector's reports on | schools at Cameron's Line, Umumuri. Correspondence from Rangitikei County Council re leasing site and residence" at Western Rangitikei was referred to Mr., Purnell., The Board has no objection to.the Kakaramea Tennis Club laying down courts in the school grounds during the pleasure of the Boards C. S. Potts, Marton, is to be advised that the Board,connotpay more than the grant for the conveyance of children. H. G; H. Larking wrote resigning National Scholarship. . Another election of school committee is to be held at Ohingaiti. Letters re Awnhou election were received. The Board endorsed Terrace End's recommendations regarding the householders' meetings which take place ;rl; the time of ihe Municipal elections, stud is to recommend to the Government that the second Monday in May be the date.
