MEAT PROSPECTS.
PROBABLE SHORTAGE OF BEEF
AND MUTTON
fPer Press Association.)
AUCKLAND. March 21
In Auckland, as elsewhere, there stttms to be an indication of a coming shortage in beef and mutton supplies. On inquiries being made to-day, it was ascertained that for freezing purposes the prospects are that this season's output will, fall short of-last year's by a considerable margin, owing, no doubt, to-the fact that, last season the beef .market wi,s overstocked. There has, in many districts, ho3ii a wholesale slaughter of young calves. The dry weather in Auckland during- the summer is also considered to have had some effect on the mutton trade, and siippliejs for freezing purposes are beginning to shorten. The fact that so much new land is being settled on in the Auckland province also accounts to a ce'rtam extent for the absorption of.a largo number of sheep which might hay© otherwise boon i rozen for export.
