Higgio; ■•:. •. ■ ■.■::■-■. - ■ ■: ..,-..■ .: Tlio annual Show of the Wanganui Agricultural Association was opened yetsterday. The weather, upon which the success of a show so largely depends, wassail that could be desired. Before noon there .was apprehension that the sun's rays would b*> oppressive during the after noon, but a delightful breeze sprang up arid proved a welcome visitor. , The Show, taken all round, is very creditable, and, provided the weather is good to-day, will b© one of, the most Buceassful yet held by the! Association. All the arrangements are in good order. For days past the officials and a large staff of men have been hard at work, with the result tho,t everything ran with the minimum friction yesterday. Tho entries are very gratifying, and, though in some classes they may .not be as large as might be desired, there is nothing to complain about the quall--ity. 'In almost every casei the responsible judge spoke warmly of the prize animals that had -lorae tinder his notice. Though what may be termed the domestic section is prominent, the purpose of an agricultural show is fully achieved, as the horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs are exceptionally good. As a matter of fact, judges who have .visited the shows at Christchurch and.Palmer-

ston state that the fat cattle and lambs are the bestM;hey have seen. This i? characteristic of most classes. The following figures are interesting, ns showing the relative entries this and last year: — 1909. 1910. Horses 424 307 Competitions (horses) 164 132 Cattle 170 189 Sheep- 237 208 Angora goats — 3 Pigs 22 22 Dogs 787 974 Home Industries ...... 729 750 Schools • * 143 ; 214 Produce 75 I 69 I Grain ........; 8 4 . Young and Co. being the only show of imple-

ments on the ground. ,Never ; before 'have so many side-shows ( been seen in )■ Wansanui. The ground in the yicini ity of the entrance gates fairly bristles I with them. In large tents, small tents J and no tents at all are a host of enterI tainerj.. Some have very high prer fc>n-'r J sions, and well the*y may. for have they j not been patronised by the aristocracy and the democracy of the world, as weU as members of every reiieious congregation. Some of the shows are ■ really {rood, and they, with the merry-go-round ocean wave, etc.. will doubt- | less do large business to-day. There f is also, of, course, the usual horde of j and'"game* of skill 0 men. The side shows undoubtedly give an ;iir of novelty and briskness which are i 9njoyed hv nil. and osbecinl'v by r.Annj try peonlej within the rfaeh of whom i shows of kind romp laroly'. J As we liav^ stated above, everytbinrc j connected with the show went smoothly j yesterday. and for this much credit is due to Grand Marshal S^nc^ir and the vftrious qffinials. Mr^S. THE DOGS

Thsrn nan be no doubt that the dog i 'f-ppnrtnicnt constituted one of tlie bast f'ffituros of the Show. In point of numerical importance it was prp-omi-.ncntly superior to every other -section, iust on a thousand entries Ivnng catalogued. Needless to say, the three

judges, Mr Johnston, of Paline-rston Is., \lr A. H Bill, ot: birmtford, and Mr H. T. Maivin, of Levin, had a particularly busy day. Btili, with the hearty and systematic co-operation of tlieir stewards, they succeeded in completing their task.-by a lew minutes after o 0 clock, &o that visitors to-day will be able to see every pvize-wmner duly ticketed. The judges were warm ~in their praise, not only of the size and ouahty of the display, but also of the manner in which the dogs were benched f.nd handled in the ring. It should be stated that Mr Johnston, at the Jast moment very kindly consented to fill Mr Paul Hunter's place, that gentleman having been prevented from attending by ~ family bereavement. The show of dogs gave satisfaction alike to exhibitors and the public. 'Mr. Watson, of Palmerston North, a noted bull-dog breeder, said he had never attended a show where he had been better treated, or where the dogs generally were better looked after. He made it his business to see the Chief Steward (Mr Bond) and congratulate him upon the excellence of the arrangements. Mr Bill, who judged the harriers, discribed them as a very strong class. All the harriers 3(5 in number, were in the ring together, and made, auite a fine sight, more like the corner of a hunting field than a show ring. Mr Makin described the fox terriers as a good class. Mr D. Mcßeth's "Toss Pot," he said, was a particularly nice puppy, and won first in maiden class, and would have scored honours in other classes had he shown himself. Neidpath Defender was another good puppy. Birchley Belvoir Avon in puppy, New Zealand-bred, colonial bred, and open classes. In bitches Napier Snowfiake was easily the best. In skye terriers Miss Fergusson's Scot ©' the Glen proved the best of the class, while in Irish terriers Mr W. J. Harper's Lurgan Teefy won first and challenge, and also carried off the ladies' bracelet. The greyhounds constituted a good class. Prison Gate won in his class, and Maggie Doolan secured the ticket for the best greyhound bitch in the Show.. Another prominent exhibitor, Mr J. White, of Palmerston North, said it WR3 altogether a -magnificent show, and the management left nothing to be desired. The judges' stewards, Messrs. Lomas and Prouse, were kept working at high pressure from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as also were the bench stewards, Messrs Gilberd and^ Willis, while the lead stewards, twenty in number, kept the contestant? moving in a constant procession from bench to board. -Messrs G. Swan and Cross, the . ticket stewards, must be congratulated on the promptitude with which they got the prize -tickets affixed to the winning dogs. But perhaps the most enthusiastic, and certainly one of the" hardest workers, was the chief steward, Mr T. H. Bond, who is in "a very largo measure responsible for the success of the Show. Tho Kennel Club greatly , appreciated the way in which the visitling exhibitors facilitated the work of ■ tbev officials. Mr Johnston had a large number of dogs to handle, but he was evidently in his element. He, like his colleagues,"was"impressed by the magnitude of the show. Speaking of the cockeir spaniels; he said there was— a marked; improvement in all classes, and the t Cocker Spaniel Club, whose, head : r;quarters' are located at Wangariui, is ■evidently doing a good work. It was,he added, rather unfortunate Mr Paul Hunter being unable; to fulfil his engagement. One exhibitor, who had come specially from the South -Island, saw fit-to withdraw his entries. This comment, one may say, was endorsed by several other prominent exhibitors, who expressed the opinion that the action of the exhibitor in question was all the-more to be regretted, seteing that Mr Hunter's place had been ;«filled byia gentleman who, like him, Mas; recognised as one of the ablest judges in the Dominion. In the black cocker spaniels the local exhibitors did very well, but one of the most improved dogs in these classes was Mr A. J. Hewson's Ponsonby Piinoe. Thecoloured classes called for no special commetnt. The black field spaniels were described by tho judge asi one of the best-balanced classes of dogs he had met with this season. In pointers the only new face worthy of special men- , tion was Mr-E. Bernasconi's Semaphorse Searcher, which the judge described as one of the best puppies to be seen in New Zealand. If he fulfils his youthful promise this youngster will have a great future. In the Engj lish setter .classes the judge noted a 1 decided improvement. The second prize bitch,. although small, was regarded by i him as one of tho best quality bitches Jof its breed '». New Zealand. Ther© j was a great show of Borzois; on© or l the best displays ever seen in the Do- ; minion, and the competition for the i Licensed Victuallers' trophy between the winning dog and bitch was exoepi tiohally keen, each animal being endowed with great qualities characteristic of the breed. Mr J. H. White had a strong team of black pugs benched, I and there was also a good show of fawn pugs, the majority of the winners in the latter section being descendants or Mr White's imported stock. The bull dogs made undoubtedly the best section of its kind yet benched here, and included dogs that had done considerable winning at other shows this season. There was an improvement, too, in the rough-coated collie classes. Mr J. H. Bagley, a well-known breeder, carried off principal honours both for dogs and bitches, with two exceptionally fine specimens. The dog, the winner of several firsts, would certainly figure high in the prize list in any of the ■shows held elsewliere this year had ha been brought out. There was a better class of bearded collies than has been seen hen-e for some years, the winning dbg in the open class especially being a beautiful quality specimen and shown in perfect condition. The working collies were also- strong classes. I
