XO STAND THIS SEASON AT WANGANUI. J The Thoroughbred Horse. . GRAVITATION By Birkenhead—Stepfeldt. Will Travel Martqn. Tiirakina, and Wanganui Districts. This well-bred horse will be at the service of Breeders in the Wanganui, Tura.kina, and Marton Districts. He is a handsome horse, 5 years old, standing 16-1 hands,, being dark brown in colour, showing good quality and substance all over. * Birkenhead, his sire, is a jDay horse, bred in England in 1896,, being by*Orme, his dam Tragedy by Ben Battle- The White Witch, by Massinessa—Jfeu <le Mots, by King Tom —Jeu d' Esprit, by Flatcatcher. • Gravitation's dam, Stepfeldt, was by Nordenfeldt out of Steppe, whc was by Saunterer out of Seclusion (dam of Hermit—winner of English Derby). Stepfeldt, this horse's dam, is a full sister to Stepniak,, our. leading sire, and is also the dam of such brilliant formers as^ —Elevation, Provocation and Gravitation; so this is a chance breeders .should not miss. Gravitation only raced as a two-year-old, but he showed his ability to gallop by annexing the Hastings Stakes (t furlongs), beating 11 others; time 50 l-sth. Also won Hopeful Stakes (4 fur.) at Wellington, Aborigine 2nd, Diabolo 3rd; time 49 1-sth. At Wanganui Autumn, won Jackson Stakes (6 fur.), -beating Irish Rifle, Glencullqch, Helen Portland, Bunyan and Millionaire. Gravitation, on account of jarring one of his joints, never raced after a two-year-old. Last ■season, Sir Geo. Clifford secured him for use at his private stud, and the following mares have proved in foal to him:— Discipline, Lady Wayward, Safeguard, Windwhistle, TereJina, To-Morrow, and several others, which is surely sufficient recommendation of the horse's qualities. Mitchell, Esq., for 360 guineas. Four colts brought £1200 in Melbourne, 1909, by Knight of the Thistle. Yearling colts in Wanganui in .190$ got Ist, 2nd, and 3rd, and filly Ist prize. Knight of Elslea, dam by Stanley, by Pride of Scotland (imp.). Stanley's dam is Dandy, who is by Gladstone, g. dam Jewess by Napoleon 111. Gladstone;, by Prince, dam, Darling. Maggie (Gladstone's dam) is by the imported, horse Thumper, who was sold .for 600 guineas, and is the winner of many first, prizes at Home and 'Tasmania. Gladstone was first shown as a two-year-ojd at Dunedin Show in 1880,, and got first prize, also was awarded premier honours at Taieri Show in the same year, and won first and champion against aged horses, for the best entire on the show ground.
