PECULIAR CASE BEFORE AUCK-
LAND COURT
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 16. George Mitchell, a young man, was charged at the Police Court to-day that ho did, on the 14th inst., assault a female, Adelaide Mills, by biting her o'i the nose.
Mr Haekett (for defendant) said he understood the girl did not want the case instituted. The young man was her lover, and they were having, as ho said,,si bit of a "smaodge," when, instead of kissing her, he accidentally gave her a nip on the nose. The girl wanted the case withdrawn.
Sub-Inspector Hendry : That's-so. I don't. It is a brutal assault. I have got plenty of evidence of what tcok place.
Evidence was given by the young lady that the accused came to her house on Sunday night to see her. They had. a little bit of trouble over a misunderstanding about a letter, and the accused hell her head back and bit her nose.
Cross-examined: Witness did not think the accused would hurt her int3iition;illv.
<:If the police are going to interest themselves in every lovers' quarrel," said Mr Haekott, "than I submit their hands la^e going to be full for quite a lons time.
The accused swore that he had had no intention of injuring the girl. The Bench were satisfied that an assault had been committed. It was evident, the girl was sheltering i he young fellow, und they sympathised with her. On every count the case was proved. A fine of £2 and costs, with an alternative of a month"'s imprisonment, was imposed.
The sequel to the case was that the younj-r lady produced the money to pay the fine.
