FOOTBALL NOTES BY "LOCK."

Pirates and Kaier.au meet this afternoon at 3 p.m., and a strenuous struggle will doubtless -take- place. Kaierau had hoped to put their strongest team in the field, but Alick Taknrangi loft for Auckland yesterday to play for the Maoris against Auckland this afternoon. The team that wins to-day will probably be returned as winners of the Charity Cup. Wanganui -Seniors have withdrawn from the' Charity Cup contest, owing to'their inability to place a full t?avn in the field, through injuries to several of their players .and oiher cause"?. A. closely-contested junior match will probably eventuate when. Pirates and Wanganui. meet this afternoon. Each team has beaten the other once, and both are equally anxious to win the rubber.

"Wnngnnni and College are level, with cne defeat-each, for the Junior Championship. Stratford has won the North Taranaki Championship. The match with the American Universities on Tuesday last was very tame. The visitors have the -makings of a fine team,,but have very little conception of the fine points of the game. Had their backs (Dwiggins excepted) been up to the standnrd of their forwards, Wanganui would have had rather a bud passage. The visiting forwards were a fast, -"heavy lot, and smothered the opposing half-back immediately ho got tho bill. When the ball did get out to the five-eishths it was usually mulled by either McFetrish or Seeling, and the three-quarters were starved. The Wanganrri forwards were weak. The five-eighths vrere very poor, and absolutely failed to open up the game. Southeombt\ who is the recognised plaoe-kick in the team, was not given a single kick at goal. Rumour whispers that club feeling had something to do with it. ' Wairarapa nlay here next Saturday, and there will need to 1>? a considerable''change in the team if a. creditable showing is to be made by Wanganui. The following team should give a good recount of itself, both in attack and defence:—Full-back, Seeling; threequarters. Signal, Southcombo, Meuhi; five-eighths, Campion, Atkinson; half, Dowe ; wing forward, Takarangi: hookers L. Northover and Gill; lock O'Donnell; sides, Brown, King; back row, Laird, Dustin.
