THE DOMESTIC HELP PROBLEM.

OPPOSITION KY TRADES COUNCIL

THE PREMIER'S REPLY

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 13. A deputation representing the Trades' and Labour Council waited on the Premier to-day to oppose the suggestion put forward by the deputation yesterday that Government assistance should bo given in the direction of importing domestic servants. It was stated that tho Council did not want to see a wall built round this country, nor did it advocate an insular, unpopulated New Zealand, but on behalf of the workers they protested against public money being spent to provide cheap and convenient labour for a rich and select ■class already well able to pay for their own requirements. The deputation also opposed the suggested introduction of boy labour for the agricultural industry. The Premier, in reply, said, with all duo reference to the deputation, he thought" something Avould liave to be done regarding domestic servants. There was a very large section of tlie community quite outside what had been called the select class. It was of the first consequence that the Goveriment should do everything to help the natural increase of population in the interests of the workers as well as any other class. "My belief," he added.. '• is that legislation which I propose to submit to Parliament this session will be ot material assistance to the workers receiving under £200 per year. The two propositions require to be considered together. If a- worker cannot afloid a general help then assistance will be given in another way."
