WANGANUI RIVER STEAMER FREIGHT CHARGES.
A QUESIION IN THE HOUSE
To-day Mr Newman asked the Government whether, in the interests of settler?, up the Wan^aum River, they will imiairo as to the rates of freight on the river steamers, and, if found to be excessive, will endeavour to have them reduced so that they may cease to bo prohibitive, as is reported to have been stated l>y Mr Dames Mackenzie (Commissioner) at the last meeting of the Wellington Land Board. Mr New.nan also asked whether

they will have the road construction work, pushed on in that district, in order that the settlers referred to may have access to the railway.
Tho reply was that inquiries are heing made as to whether the rate's of freight ha,vo been altered since the matter was last gon-3 into, and, on receipt of a report, the position will receive the careful consideration of the Government.
