UTIKU NOTES.

(F-'om Our Own Coriesponde:;t.)

Quite a gloom was cast over the township this week by the accidental death, while bushfelling, of the 10----year-old son of Mr and Mrs Doole, who arc old residents here. The funeral look place 0:1 Friday, and was largely attended. The flag at the school was hoisted half-mast out of repect to the deceased youth, who had received his education at this school. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family. As time advances industries change. Messrs Perham, Larsen and Co. have transported their mills to Rangataua and are now engaged in moving up the houses of the mill handc. Almost upon the site of one of the mills a woolshed has been built to the order of Messrs Brown Bros., who hold a largo area of native land. Settlement is retarded in this disiiict by the amount of land lying idle. Much hope is looked for in the Government's programme for this cession. The butter factory is in full swing and the settlers are getting good returns for their labours. The iOclui'ato.'i .Hoard'« inspectors have been "•conducting their annual -examinations in this district dining the last week. Much indignation is expressed by many resident's at the open way in which s\v-grcg feUir.g is being carried on. Tim Egmor.t Box •Comnany intend erecting a factory about l£ miles from the railway station. This seem-* far more sensible than railing the timber to Eltham.
