THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE.

MELBOURNE October 16

The supposition is that the Surrey fire was caused by heat from bunkers igniting the refrigerating insulation. It is reported that a. fire occurred in the bunkers before the- steamer left Sydney, but it was thought to have been thoroughly quenched. Lloyd's surveyor reports that the steamer is not mu>ch damaged, but the destruction of the cargo by fire and water will probably be serious.

(The Surrey is a vessel of about 7000 tons. She is one of the Federal line, and is well-known in New Zealand waters, having made many trading voyages to the Dominion. During the Boer war she was engaged in transport work, which included the carrying c/P one of the New Zealand contingents to South Africa).
