OHAKUNE NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Ohakune last week experienced some very heavy frosts, but rain set in. with a storm on Saturday morning, so we are having winter in full force. Last week the Public Works Department handed the Horopito Road over to the Roads Department, and they have already put v, man on to repair the section of the road leading to the station, which was getting in a very bad state. Messrs Jopp Bros, have purchased Mr H. W. Littlewood's coaches, which run to the station. In consequence the fares have gone up from sixpence to one shilling.

The Ohakune footballers journeyed to Karioi last Saturday, and played a drawn game, both teams scoring ten points. Last Thursday (Court day) brought forward another long programme for the Magistrate, including one case of sly grog, the retailer being fined £10 on each of two charges. On July Ist the wholesale licenses which were granted commenced operations. In Ohakune things seemed to pass over very quietly, but I believe in Rangautaua more business was done.

Last week Mr Canning, our local postmaster, shifted his furniture into the dwelling compartments of the new Post Office. I believe the office furniture is to be shifted in next week. The new building is a very nice structure, and should prove a boon both to the officials and the general public.

Last Thursday night some person on persons performed a very mean act by sawing the Ohakune Pound gate in half and knocking some of the rails off the fence. The Town Bonrd intend to offer a, substantial reward for information that will lead to a conviction. It is to be hoped the culprit will be brought to justice, as people of this sort are a menace to the town.

The railway authorities are now prepared for the snow on the Main Trunk, as there is a snow plough in readiness stationed at Ohakune. So far we have had no snow this year, but there is plenty of time yet for it to come.
