WELLINGTON LAND BOARD.

A meeting of the District Land Board was held at Wellington on Thursday, and was attended by Messrs James Mackenzie (Commissioner of Crown Lands), A. Reese, C. J. Canton, and H. T. Ellingham.

The Chairman informed the Board that Mr C. J. Canton had been reappointed as a member, for an additional term from May 27th. He had also to welcome Mr H. T. Ellingham, the special representative of the Crown tenants, who would assuredly do good work work on the Board.

The following applications for land were approved, subject to the usual conditions :—

Titles.—J. Midford, A. H. J. Hall, C. Carlson, G. A. Wheeler, and J. C. Bishop. CONVERSION.—Estate of G. W. Brant, Himterville. TRANSFERS.—E. Clifford to A. J. Jack, A. Dick to P. W. Jensen, T. R. Husband to A. R. Still., Public Trustee in the estate of J. Wilson (deceased) to B. R. Bunny, A. Cooper to T. H. Collins™ (three sections), executor in the estate of J. Weber (deceased) to CV P. Storey, J. Sigley to D. Sutherland, J. Gordon to M. Clarkin, H. Ray to J. Sheridan (two sections), F. and F. Bielski to F. J. Green, F. M. Tansey to H. J. Death, E. Walker to J. L. Jensen, W. J. Coulter to W. H. Herd, A. Hagan to M. Walsh, Harold Bennett to Henry Bennett, M. Fierney to W. D. Bell, Te A Wainohu, T. Wainohu, and T. K. Te Huki to T. Wainohu, W. Te Huki, and Te A. Wainohu, E. C. A. Martin to R. G. Foreman, H. E. Yokes to F. W. Beechey (provided the latter took up residence within six months, and the statutory declaration was deposited as to improvements being effected), W. Rundell (provided the Commissioner is satisfied the conditions have been complied with), executor in the estate of Harry Thomas (deceased) to Charles Lassen, executrix in the estate of W. J. Thomas (deceased) to Louisa Lassen, A. Redpath to Lilian E. Prujean (provided the transferee is eligible).

The Crown lands ranger was instructed to report regarding the following applications for transfers: —F. M'Kein to H. Nicholson, W. MA. Duncan to Mrs J. P. Duncan, A. Davidson to Mrs C. Mickleson.

A report from the Crown Lands ranger was read in connection with the application for transfer from T. J. M'Quinn to H. I. Holmes, and the transfer was approved. An application by A. C. Nicol to transfer a section in Ohakune Village Settlement to Mra Layinia Piper for the purposes of a maternity home was approved. "It was resolved to decline the application for transfer from S. Coffin to J. 11. Powell, as the latter was not eligible to hold the section.

The Board decided that it had no power to deal with the proposed transfer from H. E. Rowntree to G. Wrightson.

The Commissioner reported that "-the Acting Minister for Lands had refused his consent to the transfer from J. P. Punch to J. S. Lacy. An application was made by F. J. Addis to take F. Addis as a partner to work his section. The Board decided to obtain a report from the ranger. Transfer of the license in connection with Section 3, Block 11., Hunua (199 acres), was approved, from M. Clarkm to B. Hutson, Presbyterian minister. The Presbyterian Church applied lor Section 6, Block VI., Ohakune Township, as a site for a church. It fivns agreed to recommend that the freehold be granted at a price to be fixed by trie Commissioner, , provided that the land was not required for public purposes. Messrs Arrowsmith and Black asked the Board to reconsider its decision in reference to the subdivision of section 23, Taihape Village Settlement. The Board discussed the application in committee, and resolved to abide by its former decision.

Permission was granted to G. J. Goldfince, jun., to subdivide Section 19, Block V., Karori, provided the ranger's report was satisfactory. S. Boyd applied to sublet 200 acres at Umutoi to H. C. Reikes; the application was granted. James Croft was also granted leave to sublet part of his section in Mackenzie Village Settlement to "Peter Lawsort for five years, at an annual rental of £12.

G. M. Evans and Mrs K. Poad were granted permission to sublet a portion of their section at Waiopalm to Richard Williams, for five years, at an annual rental of £45.

The offer of the Rangataua Timber Company to pay £3 per acre for the milling timber on Section 31, Ohakune Village Settlement, was accepted on condition that the company supplied the lessee with any building timber he might require at cost price, and completed the cutting within two years. Messrs Sollitt Bros., sawmillers, Ohakune, offered to mill the timber on the Ohakune Village Homestead section at £3 per acre, and it was resolved to accept on the following terms: —(1) That the cutting b& started at an early date, and finished in time to burn the bush next summer; (2) that any building timber required by the lessee be supplied at cost price. The Commissioner stated that the Acting TJnder-Secretary of the Agricultural Department had requested that sections in Ohakune township should be reserved for that Department. It was resdved not to approve of the request, as it was proposed to reserve the whole of the block for the use of the Land and Roads Departments.

The Board agreed that Gilbert Hunter should l)e allowed to occupy three acres of Crown Lands near the Owhango Railway Station, at a rent of 25s per annum.

It Avas resolved to approve of section 2, Block XIV., Bewa, 10 acres, being ftllqtted to Messrs Hori te Huku. Raurimu Te Huki. Maori to 00, Ngapera Kohari, and Pani Kingi (the owners of adjoining section), for cash, at the price of £15, weighted with £30, value of improvements, three months' notice of sale to be gazetted.

A renewal of lease of Hurupi Block for three years was applied for by Major Tunurangi, and the Board decided to ask the ranger for a report.

Thirty-three acres at Umutoi were allotted to Wm. M'Kean, ]un., on the O.R.P. system, at £5 10s per acre.

It was resolved to approve of section 41, Pohonui Village Settlement, which has been withdrawn frbm sale, being reoffered for cash by public auction, at an upset price of £27. weighted with £73 10s for improvements.

Regarding C. Blake's application to bo allowed to select an additional area of Crown land for a. better fencing -line adjoining his section at Mikimiki, the ranger recommended that a strip of land be ffered at 20s per acre, subject to the applicant paying cost of survey. The Board agreed to carry out this recommendation.

F. J. Read, lessee of 112 acres in Dyer Settlement, applied for 12 months'

exemption from residence, as he had been burnt out. The Board granted his request.

Miss H. Punch, lessee of 10 acres in Raetihi Village Settlement, wrote that she intended building on the land at an early date. The Board held that she must build and commence residence within two months.

After receiving a report from the ranger, the Board granted A. Sharp, lessee of 522 acres in the Huangarua Tablelands Settlement, six months m which to build and reside.

T. E. Monaghan, lessee of 10 acres in the Torere Village Settlement," applied for twelve months' exemption from residence, and for permission to sublet the old dwelling on the land to a Mr Martin for a small rental. Six months' exemption was granted.

J. D. Anderson, lessee of sections 20 and 3, Blocks IX. and X., Ruahine, wrote asking the Board to forfeit his interest, as he found it impossible to carry on the lease. The area is 2755 acres of second-class land, selected on March 26th last, the annual rental bein?: €150. It was resolved to postpone (■uiir.ideration until the next meeting of tiio Board.

Messrs Quinn Bros, wrote explaining their action in building on portion of Mr Spooner's pastoral run in the Raketapauma JBlock. The surrender by Mr bpooner of this strip of land was accepted, and a lease issued by Messrs Quinn. Bros.

Proposals for the expenditure of thirds were approved as follow:—• Mauriceville County. Council, £4 6s 3d; Pt-tone Borough" Cuncil, £d 4ls sd.

J. Daysh attended and made application to be exempted from residence on section 7b, Block XVI., Wairarapa, Dyer Settlement, for twelve, months, and the Board granted Jris request.— "Dominion."
