Mr John McFarlane, Mayor of Tapanui, died suddenly yesterday afternoon, presumably frojn heart disease. Mr Morris Fox, Government Actuary, leaves Wellingtori'for-Sydney on Friday by the Moeraki, en route for Vienna, to attend the International Actuarial Conference?.

At a meeting of the Otago EducationBoard last night Dr. J. R. Don, late Rector of \ the Waitaki. Boys' High. School, was appointed inspector in succession to Mr Fitzgerald, who retired last month.

Rev A." S- Wilson left by mail train yesterday for Wellington, where he will address the annual -meeting of the* Central. Baptist Auxiliary on Wednesday night and a combined meeting of Ihe Baptist Bible classes of Wellington: and' Suburbs on-; Thursday night. A pleasant little function took placer at the Wangamii Brewery on' Monday evening, when Mr Alf. Gibbons, who is about to be married, was presented* by the brewery employees with a dinner and tea service. The presentation was made by Mr Frank Bre win. Thetoast of "The Happy Couple" was also1 honoured, after which "For he's a jollygood fellow" was sung.
