TE NGUTU-O-TE-MANU.

MEMORIAL SERVICE

(Per Press Association.)

HAWERA, September 7. There was a. great gathering at Te Ngutu-o-te-iMahu yesterday to commemorate the disastrous engagement of 40 years ago to-day, when Yon Tempsky's force was so disastrously defeated and the gallant major fell. Of the force which took part in the engagement seven survivors were present yesterday :—J. Livingston and J. Flynn (Hajwera), J. H. Walker (Wattara), J. Hickmann (Urenui), J. Odd Quinley (Inglewood), and J. J. Griffiths and T. P. Lister (New Plymouth).

The Hon. R. McNab was personally introduced and examined the medals worn by the veterans. Addressing the assemblage, Mr. McNab said many such gatherings would simplify the defence problem, for sentiment would be built up, round which a rallying-point cou'd be formed. We were living in a fool's paradise. It must not be thought, because there were now no enemies within our borders, that the defence problem was solved. With the advance of civilisation the Powers were now able to strike from a great distance.

Mr. Major, M.P., and others also spoke.

Many tributes were paid to Yon Tempsky's memory.

Volunteer corps and bands from all parts of the district took part. Mr. NoNab left for Wellington this morning.
