CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CONFERENCE— The Wellington Chamber of Commerce suggested a conference of delegates from all the Chambers of Commerce in the Dominion. The suggestion was approved and it wss decided that the President (Mr Keesing) be asked to attend,, and failing him, Mr E. A Campbell. NATIVE LANDS AND APPELLATE COURTS—The Chairman moved thab <lln view of the large accumulation of Native «-Land Court work and the long delays in- Appellate Court work in Wanganui and other centres of native districts, this Chamber urges upon the Government the absolute necessity of \regular and more frequent sittings in order to overtake the congested business and ensure a reasonable despatch of the business in future." In the course of the discussion which ensued, Mr Gregor McGregor gave an instance of how native court business is delayed. In the case of the sub-division of Waimarino No. 3, which was made in June of last year, an application was immediately fi'ed for a re-hearing and a request made, based on strong reasons, why the re-hearing should take place as early as possibly. Fifteen months had now elapsed and no re-hearing had yet been taken, nor was there any indication when the Appellate Court would sit to take the case. The present system—or want of system—in regard to native land and Appellate Courts was a very serious matter. It was . irritating to the parties interested, hindering settlement and demoralising the natives. The present intermittent sittings were regarded as occasions for picnics by ths young Maoris who came to town, looked around for weeks and months at a time, and spent all their money. If sittings were held at regular intervals the business would be conducted by a few natives delegated, and sent down for the purpose instead of large bodies coming down ana" pienrcing. Mr E. A. Campbftll remarked that much more expedition was required in the conduct of the business of1 the Native Courts. To the Maoris time was of no mement. and it almost appeared as if some of the judges through long contact with the Maori methods, had themselves become oblivious of the importanca of time.
