AUCKLAND LICENSING COMMITTEE. '-■**■ " •'■^^■■^ ■—— (Per Press Association .) AUCKLAND, Sept. 1. ' At a meeting of the City Licensing Committee to-day, the clerk (Mr H. G. ltalfe) produced a letter from a temperance society on the question of the conduct of the Auckland hotels during the past three months or so. The letter, which was forwarded by the Auckland Young Men's Real Temperance Club, stated that with reference to the report of the Young Men's No-license Club, which was considered at the annual meeting of the committee in June, they had given careful attention to the conduct of the various Auckland hotels. Their members had visited the hotels at irregular intervals and the reports were in almost every case considered to be very satisfactory, and were totally at varianco with those furnished by the Young Men's No-license Club. There had been observed every disposition on the part of the hotelkeepers to conduct choir business on good lines, having every regard, for the obligations due by them.-to jfche public. The licensing laws were strictly observed especially as regarded the hours of closing and the refusal of liquor to persons showing any signs of intoxication. Even during the pressure of Fleet week the hotels were conducted in a manner which called forth the highest praise from prominent visitois, and from the public. The reports, taken right through, fully substantiated those of the police at the annual meeting. In conclusion, they would point out that the Auckland hotels were satisfactorily conducted and a credit to the city. A member pointed out that a statement had been made in the South describing the Fleet week proceeding as a ''bacchanalian orgy." Mr Dyer. S.M. (chairman): You don't want to take any notice c these irresponsible statements. As far as the police know, the hotelkeepers did their best to conduct their businesses in a proper manner. PETITION.—A petition was presented signed by a numbc-r of ratepayers la the upper portion of the Wanganui County and the Upper Wangaehu/Road districts asking for an alteration of boundaries so that that portion of the district they reside in could be severed from the Wanganui County and annexed to the County of Rangitikei. Th 9 petitioners pointed out that there is no community of interest between the axea referred to and the rest of the Wanganui County; that the said area is bounded on the south and" east by the County of Rangitikoi, and that the s*id ooundaries are most unsatisfactory, as they intersect roads and district indiscriminately ; that all the traffic of the said area is towards the railway and into the Rangitikei County; and that the latter possesses the greater" facilities for governing the said area and maintaining roads.—lt was resolved that the Chairman, Or McGregor, and the clerk be appointed a committee to go into the matter and report at next meeting. A PROTEST.—Some discussion took place on the action of various Labour Unions in agitating for the removal of Mr Justice Sims from the Arbitration Court. Eventually it was resolved— " That this Council, as the representative of a very large farming district, regret very much that some of the Laboul Unions in the Dominion have thought fit to call into question the decision 01 Judge Sim in the farm labourers' dispute in Christohurchj and this Council feel that any reflections on one of our* judges^ for giving a decision which happens to bo adverse to a section of the labour party, is against all ' law and order."
