WANGANUI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was field last evening:—

PRESENT.—The Mayor. (Mr C. B. Mackay), Ors. Liffiton, Purser, Harkness, and Carson. Apologies for ab sence were received from Cr. Battle, Poynter, Muir, and Spriggens.

MINUTES.—The minutes of the last meeting were confirmed.

IN MEMORIAM.—Resolved, on the motion of the Mayor, and seconded by Cr. Carson—" That the Council place on record in the minutes book the Council's regret at the death of the late Mr A. D. Willis, and that a letter of sympathy be conveyed to the deceased's wife and family." ,

TENNIS.—The Rev. A. S. Wilson wrote, asking the Council to allow the poung people of the Baptist Church to use ;two tennis^courts on St. John's Hill, as he is anxious^ to form a tennis club. —Referred to the Heserves Committee.

LICENSE.—(Mr E. E. Collins wrote, stating he wished to take out an auctioneer's license for the district of Wanganui, and asking the Couifcil to give the required sanction.—Granted.

NIXON STREET EXTENSION.—A letter \iaa rec&tyed from the secretary or; the Wanganui College Boai'd of asking the Council at what oast they will ".form, and make "Nixon ~Street Extension " . from Ingestre Street to' Plymouth Street.—< Resolved thai; Mr Gihnour be instructed to make an'estimate of tie- work and the Town Glei'k report to - the College' Trustees. :„:<[ TRAM WAY.— From .; the Public i.WprkV Department, stating that Mr G. |'iL: Cook, district engineer at Stratford, [had been appointed to inspect the Wanganui tramways during construction.— •The Borough Engineer reported that Mr Cook; had expressed his satisfaction with : the work done.

' CAMERA. OB&CURA.--A letter was received, ■ from ft. VicioV Beck re particulars- of the proposition for eFeCllng ancariiera obscura in "Wanganui. From theo fficeof the Minister of Internal Affairs, notifying 'that it was proposed to ask his Excellency the Governor to include Diirie•towii within the borough of Wanganui (the boundaries were published in the .": Chronicle," of June 26th, 1908.—Re solved to reply that the Council is agreeable to the proposal. TRUSTEESHIP.-^. Liffiton referred to the vacant trusteeship of the Racecourse occasioned' by the death of Mr A. D. Willis. He ■•moved that the Council make . recommendation to the Government to" appoint the Mayor (Mr Mackay) to be appointed a trustee in place of the late Mr A..D. Willis — Carried. .

TRAMWAY COMMITTEE.— The Tramway Committee submitted the following report.—Re Completion of Contract : The Committee received a communication from the contractors that they expect to complete the contractabout the end of October or early in November, providing the weather is favourable. We have instructed ta© engineer to notify the contractors to proceed with the work more expeditious^ ly, as the contract time for completion expires on 16th September. Order-in-Council: The Committee recommend that the Council apply to the Governor tor the issue of an Order-in Council to permit trailer cars to be used.
