WANGANUI RIVER TRUST.

A meeting of the Wanganui River Trust was held at tho Trust's offices, /Rid'gway Street, yesterday. Present. - Messrs T. D. Cummins (in tho chair), J. T. Stewart, W. GL Bassett, T B Williams, J. T. Hogan, M.P., C. £ Mackay, and J. H. Keesinw. MINUTES—The minutes of iflie previous meeting -were read1 and confirmed. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT—The Chairman (Mr T. I>. Cummins), reported that four parties were engaged in the improvement works, between Taumaranui and Pipiriki and were doing good' work, as was also a party working in the reaches .below Pipiriki. That, taking into the abnormally low condition of the river, consequent on the dry Weather, and that on occasions the river has been, below the lowest recordeded level for some years, the traffic had been efficiently maintained and that the recent visit of tho River Trust party (Messrs Cummins, J. T. Stewart and Mr Hogan, M.P.), showed that the improvement works projectedl by the Trust .had been of incalculable benefit in the maintenance of the traffic, which' had, been uninterrupted and had been riillv maintained1. Four parties were now working on the readies between Taumiranui and Retaruke and for a few miles below, and one party between Pipiriki and Wanganui. There was still a considerable quantity of work to be accomplished1, but the efforts'of the Trust were in, that direction.

REQUEST.—Messrs OHham aiwi Co., and the proprietor of the Taumaranui River Seir-ice Company, wrote asking for permission to use a portion of the landing site at Taumaranui for their purposes. They were referred to the Commissioner of Crown Lands. Auckland, in whom the landing site at Taumaranui was vest&d for permission to occupy. THE TANIWHA.—Messrs Oldham wrote that they had put on the launch Taniwiha, as the first of their fleet to work the upper portion of the river from laumaranui as far as Retaruke: ACCIDENT.—The Chairman ..reported that an accident had occurred to one of the Trust employees working at Retaruke, whereby he had1 sustained an injury., This had bsen promptly met by the Ocean Accident Assurance Association, with whiomi the Trust emplevoes were insured, and the man had ..been' satisfactorily dealt with, receiving as compensation^ £10 7s Id.
