TARANAKI BEATS SOUTHLAND.
Per Press Association
HAWERA, August 28. The Southland v. Taranaki match was, on the whole, rather uninteresting, but was a fairly even go. Southland were superior in the forwards, but Tartemaki's fine back division more than equalised. Two minutes after the start, (Mynott put in very clever work, and iWard, following him, scored on the corner. The attempt at conversion failed. Then Hamilton converted a penalty for Southland, and soon after •Jenkins (Southland) scored a try. Taranaki equalised before the end of the spell, OSardgreaves converting a penalty. Six points all. The second spell had been in progress for some time, when Hunter dashed right through,, and got in after a wonderfully dashy rim. Colman scored the next, rumiine right through the centre of the field from half-wtay. Ward failed with a very easy kick. Tho final try was cleverly got by Dive. Burgess was the ibest of the Southland backs. The forwards were fair. The Taranaki forwards were poor, Sheehan being the l>est. Hunter, Mynott, 'Dive, 'and Coleman played splendidly in the back division. Hardgreaves' lacking was capital. Taranaki 15, Southland 6. Peter Mackie referred.
