Mr J. M. Blackmail, who has beetr appointed gas manager' at Mastei'ton, hari been employed at Auckland, Metropolitan Works (Melbourne), Brighton. (Melbourne), . and Castlamaine (Victoria), being engineer and secretary to the latter for thirteen years.
At Auckland on Saturday last at tl)e age of 90 years, there died Mr. Charles .Ring, the first discoverer c.f\ -gold in New Zealand. He was boru in Guernsey, and caino out to Tasmania "when a boy. In 1841 he catup'.' to Auckland,, and farmed near One-^ hunga. The .Californian gold rush attracted him, but he was shipwrecked on the coast and. lost everything. Returning to Australia, he was wrecked on a reef naai' Fiji, and with sow? kindred spirits started for Queensland in an open boat. The party wen* picked up by a whaler and brought to Auckland, whero Mr. Ring and his brother settled After a while they determined to prospect the Thames and Coremandol ranges, and discovered gold at Cabbage Bay. For tho last thirty years Mr. Ring has lived a retired lifo in Auckland, where ho had many warm friends. ■ "' -
