TECHNICAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

Tha monthly meeting of the above was held yesterday morning. Present: Messrs. F. M. Spurdle (in tho chair), A. M. McLeod, H. T. Johns, C. M. Biirrell, A. Vamey, and Revs. R. M. Ryburn and A. Dewdney. With regard to blocking the light of the Tec. by buildings on St. Paul's Church grounds, the Rev. Ryburn stated that tho law did not prevent this being done. Mi. Varney reported that circulars had been issued to all teachers and schools in tho district with regard to the exhibition of school work to be held at the end of the year. It had been suggested by Mi. Gray that diplomas, and not prizes, bo given the successful exhibitors. Mr. Varney stated that he had i interviewed the Carnival Committee as! to what help they would give towards tho exhibition. A communication was received to tho effect that Lady Plunket would probably open the exhibition oi: work in December, and also distribute the school prizes. Lady Plunket would also distribute the prizes at the Girl's' College and the day schools. It was decided that the following prizes bo allotted for the following subjects, and.that if possible the prize money be collected 6, arithmetic 6, ■mathematics 2, French 1, typewriting 4, shorthand 4, bookkeeping 4, electricity 2, cookery 2\ needlework 1, commercial correspondence 2, plumbing 2, painting and decorating 1, telegraphy 1 model 1, light and shade 1, painting flowers 1, painting from life 1, geometry 2, building construction 1, machine construction 1, wood-carving 4, and writing (most marks in any four examinations to count),- Mr. Spurdle's special prize. Mr Varney reported that the school had been connected with the telephone. Mr. Varney said these classes were paying satisfactorily, but needed more publicity. Mr. Varney was instructed to attend to this matter. It was suggested that the cookery stwdentn should exhibit at the Agricultural Show the result of their coo&ery. On tho suggestion of Mr. Varney, it was decided that tho secretary communicate with business firms in the town with a view to getting them to procure their typists and shorthand writers fiom the Technical School. It was decided that the scholarships awarded by tho Builders' and Contractors' and the Plumbers' Unions should be open only to students attending the school. It was also decided that the secretary communicate with local bodies with a view to increasing the number of scholarships. A number of students in this clasn wrote' re the teachers, and a committee was set up to see to the matter. The same committee will also consider tho date for an examination for thi.s class.
