AUCKLAND, September 13. Tho Manapouri, from the Islands, passed close to the volcano in Savaii, which is still active, and the passengers witnessed a brilliant spectacle at night. It is estimated that the volcano has ejected millions of tons of matter. The crater is about seven miles inland, and the flow of lava has not reached the sea, but large streams of lava flow down the sides of the mountain, and a largo gully is completely filled. It is understood that so far there has been no loss of life.
AUCKLAND, September 13. Tho Samoa "Zeitung" reports that a big ifoya was held in front of Government House at Mottootua on August 17, in which pardon was sought for the two high chiefs—Tamasese and Malcaliifano. Over a thousand chiefs and orators wero present, all related to the r<nmed chiefs. They sat in Samoan fashion, making an ifoya, which means, "You may slaughter and cook us." They presented mats, which the Governor, after making a speech, accepted, and agreed to remit the sentence of deportation on the two chiefs named.
