MARTON J.C. ANNUAL MEETING

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING

Beautiful weather prevailed for the annual hack meeting of the Marton Jockey Club, and there was a large attendance of spectators, inicluddng visitors from all parts of the island. The racing throughout was most interesting, large fields, close finishes, and big dividends being the order of the day. The Hunt Club Cup was a most exciting contest, and though there were several spills during the race some excellent jumping was shown. The favourite, John Peel, owned by MajorGeneral Babington, who, with Captain Campbell, A.D.C., was present at the meet'ng to see Jiis horse run, fell at the first fence, Emerald Isle baulked, Jackaroo broke his neck at the hencoop, and (Marcus also came a cropper, the ultimate winner turning up in Mr H. Gaisforcl's mare Columbine, who Showed a. nice turn of foot in the straight, and was cleverly handled 'by Mr Gaisford. The highly-bred Truce (Graft-on—Nava-nine) easily accounted for the Trial Stakes, another well-bred filly in Operetta winning the (Maiden Plate in convincing style. Lady's Link scored decisively in the Trial' Hurdles after Catspaw had made all the running, while in the Handicap Hurdles Baltic just squeezed home from Moetoropuku. The Flying was easily annexed by Maninella from the well-bred Tupono (Medallion —Paltirie), who should see a better day. Atssayer won the Crofton Handicap nicely, and Kuroki <socred cleverly in the Tutaenui Welter. Several of the horses competing at tihe meeting are palpably short of work, and will probably show very different form during the next few weeks. The Marton Band, under Mr 0. Petler»on, enlivened proceedings with a capital programme of music. The sectary, Mr G. F. 'Bishop and his staff engineered the meeting through punctually, and without a 'hitch. The stai-t----ing of Mr G. H. Saywell, considering the size of the fields, was first-class, ana the placings of 'Mr R. <H. Aldworth in the judge's box were never questioned. The amount put through the totalisators during the day totalled £5613, an increase of £1391 over the amount (handled on the first day of last year's meetings.
