When crossing the Hokianga bar on Sunday th-a steamer May Howard shipped a sea which smashed the wheel, tore ■a hole in the bulwarks, flooded the engine room, and stopped the machinery. The vess&l broached to in a rough sea, but eventually righted without further ■damage.
