Magnificent weather prevailed for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting The course was in fairly good order, and the attendance of the public was above the average. Til© double event tote on the Wellington Steeplechase- and Parliamentary Handicap paid a dividend of £71 15s. The sum of £10,414 was put through the machines for the first day, as compared with £8,650 on th© corresponding day of last year. Results — Sftewacnd's Handicap—Wet Reef 1, Tonck-fghie 2, Sardonyx 3. Also started -—Good Intent, Coxswain, Tessera, Matuku, Hinurewa, Cure, Prisoner, and j Waitoii. Won by a length. Time, Imin 2 l-ssec. Dividends £2 Is and £2 6s. Mirimar Hack Handicap.—Bly the .Ward 1, Sir Perceval 2, Onyx 3. Also started —Recreation, Wiataulri, Waimata, Martin O'Brien, Claremount, Dulcinut, and Paderewski. Won by a head.
