CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION.
ON THE '.'COACH"
CONTROVERSY
Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, July 11. The appointment of a coach to the 2»fow Zealand football team was dis'*ussed at a meeting of the Canterbury Tjßugrb;? Union. - The Chairman said he was satisfied tjfrom tho opinions expressed by the -players that the presence of Duncan as -a coach would be an, element of discord, but whether the Management should be tampered with on 'the eve of the departure of the team was a matter for very careful consideration. Tho secretary remarked that the easiest solution of the difficulty would be \io; Duncan to "pull out." The Chairman: "jhose of us who are "behind the scenes know that he is very ■mnpopula? with players." . : ::,Mr. F. T. Evans said they had to •^consider the possibility of the resignation of the. Management Committee, -svhoso services New Zealand football ■xcould not afford to lose. Although the **ommitfcee had done wrong in'the matter of the appointment of the coach, he ."did not think they should go against • . Mr. Walton spoke in a similar strain, -and added that Duncan was absolutely tho last man who should have been •«.«hosen as coach, if a coach was neces- ■ sary. With very great reluctance he would move, "That the Union's delegate be instructed to support the Man---.agement Committee in sending Duncan, *ut at the same time to express the -^opinion of the Union that their action an sending Duncan as coach is ill advis•■•ed." After rescinding the previous resolutions, instructing the delegate not to vote on the subject at all, the above motion was carried unanimously. Mr. Walton suggested that in the ~«event of tho resignation of the ftlan- ■ -agement Committee, the Union's delergato should be instructed to move, .^That tho headquarters of the New '.iZealand Union be removed to Christ--jchurch," but it was pointed out that there would be ample opportunity to do this after the committee had actually • resigned. It was decided to ask the editors of •one of the local morning and ■eveninw .^ewspapers to deny the statement that footballers were responsible for Saturday night's street row.
