The Naval Bill debate is proceeding. Mr Reid, concluding a fine speech dealing with Australian andl Empire idefenoe, ■wherein he expressed sympathy with those favouring; the creation of an Australian Navy, said in giving Ms cordial vote for this agreement as some slight acknowledgement of tibe benefits derived fnom the Empire, _he could not shut his eyes to tihe fact that tJie payment, of a subsidy was beginning in ; a very plausible way— a. Avay that h!ad it: been submitted in 1887 would have been rejected by the people of Australia. .
