Wanganui County Council
The usuail monthly meeting of the W*arigancti County Council was .held on Tuesday when there w»re present—Crs. Neilson (in the chair), v Wilson, Speed, Thos. Higgie and Fletcher. minutes.—The minutes of the previous^ meeting were read and confirmied. Accounts.—Accounts amounting to £241 7s. lldi. were passed for payment. Tenancy.—Resolved that Mr. Garrett's letter be received, and that lie be informed that his tenancy is in terms of the Council's letter to him of April 20 last. Upokongaro -.Ferry.—Mrs. Alßsock, the lessee of the Upokongaio Ferry, waited on the Council and -stated that the underwater wire had been of no use to her in working the ferry during the late freshes, and that she had been unable to work the ferry from May 27 to June 7. It was resolved* that Mrs. Allccok be allowed £3 from her next quarter's rent.—The Chairman's action in having the approaches to the ferry metal'ied was confirmed.—lt was resolved that the opinion of the County solicitor be taken upon the question as to whether the Council has power to carry on a ferry at Upokongaro, in view of the fact that the traffic on the Wanganui river may be temporarily obstructed thereby, and the solicitor be asked) to confer with Mr. H. D. Bell,, solicitor, of Wellington,, thereon.' . ■ . . Hardwood Timber.—The action, of the Chairmian in agreeing that the Gounod, should pay for the inspection of the time ber in New South Wales was approved. Aberfeldie Bridge.—Mr. Raynes having resigned, it was resolved to invite applications for the position of inspector foi' the Aberfeldie bridge. ; Loan. —If was resolved.-that the clerk, take steps to raise a loan of £2500 for the purpose of paying the Council's portion .of the construction of the Aberfeldie bridge and £1500 for the reconstruction of the Wanganui bridge. Road Metalling.—The Chairman was au-. thorised to have the road from; the Wanganui bridge to Durile's Creek metalled. Road Completion.—lt was resolved that the Chairman be instructed to write to the Minister of Lands pointing out the urgent necessity that exists for the completion of the Baratuki road, to the Mangamahu township, and asking if, in the event of the Education Board giving the land free of cost, would the Crown provide any sum of money required to compensate the present tenant for lots of usage and for fencing. . The Council then adjourned.
