WANGANUI J.C. SPRING MEETING.

SECOND BAi

Ideal weather prevailed for the second and concluding day's lacing yesterday. The •course was in capital condition, and the going first-rate. The attendance was again very large, and, in view of the settled sunshiny weather, many beautiful spring costumes were in evidence, lending colour and animation to the scene. The racing throughout was extremely interesting, the finishes being at times very exciting, particularly in the la,st race, in which Tortulla scored by half a head after a desperate struggle with Nioiti, who proved herself a game little handful. _ The meeting was. singularly free from accidents, not one being recorded during the two days. Only one protest, was entered during the meeting, the win of Governess being protested against in the Hack Flying on the ground.of inconsistent running, the protest being eventually dismissed. Halberdier scored a popular win in the Wanganui Sattkes, and the decided manner'in which he silenced the opposition augurs well for his Riccarton prospects. The running.of some of the other Cup horses at the meeting was disappointing. Bowman, Melwood, Golden Vein, and Ostiak performing indifferently. The Wanganui Band,'under Mr Crichton*. performed an excellent programme of (popular selections, those mositi appreciated being, perhaps "Gems of Sullivan" and "Cotton Blossoms." The catering for the meeting, in the hands of Mr W. 8. Dustin, was a special feature of the meeting, evoking general approval. Mr J. S. Palmer, of 'Chav'annes,' t? had control of the liquid -refreshments, and left nothing to he desired, lne totalisator receipts for the meeting were £14,039, as against £11,805 last y«ar, being an increase of £2234, which is very satisfactory. During the last race the flags were lowered to half-mast in respect to the memory of Mr J. T. Moore, news of whose decease reaching the course at that time.
