NOTES BY "MAXIM."

The news that St. Michael has gone amiss in his training, fmd will in all probability be a non-starter for the New Zealand Cup, is to be greatly regretted, as his chance was much fancied in well-informed quarters, and the race would lose much interest by his defection. The decisive manner in which he won the Auckland and Wellington Cups augured well for his prospeeta next month in the big event, for which he had been well supported.

Gleneoe would (probably have won the Hack Hurdles yesterday but for striking several hurdles hard, which interfered with his chances.

Ib struck me that Windwhistle might have been much better handled in the Flying Handicap, in. which she was twice blocked. She may win to-day. Chasseur showed a great turn of foot for five furlongs in the "Flying, but the las*b bit found him out. '

• Queen's Guard is not quite wound tip, and will probably be much better later on in the season.

Fakir came with a great run at the entrance to the straight an the Spring Handicap, but could never foot it with The Shannon or Loch Erne.

The running of Halberdier, was a surprise to the /majority who, with his Bulls running in mind, did not give him a "possible." He must be very dangerous 'n whatever he starts for in the near future.

Rita was well backed in the Moutoa. Hack Handicap, but got badly left at the past.

Sir Galahad, the Gaulus—Lady Mildred colt in Prosser's stable, looks in much better condition than when he last raced here. When this gentleman scores—which I expect shortly—he will probably pay a fair price.

Tha-e were two distinct classes in the First Hurdles, and it would take some difference in weight to bring the three topweights to the rest of the field.

The rider of Waitohi in the Hack Hurdles was fined £1 for riding in wrong colours yesterday.

Porirua was not ridden right out in the Guineas.

Cave, who was well backed in the Putiki Hack yesterday, finished disaipipointingly. He looks short of a gallop or two.
